Diablo 5 was revealed at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026, with a teaser and a Spring 2029 release window, and the Forging the Next Era panel showed its story, world, first classes and items that afternoon. After the Diablo IV news, the presenters turned "to give you a first glimpse of Diablo's next era": "For 30 years, Sanctuary has stood on the edge of oblivion. The opening ceremony
The Diablo segment opened on the anniversary: "Since 1996, more than 130 million players have helped shape Diablo into what it is today", and anniversaries "are a chance to get excited about what's still ahead".
The teaser shows Sanctuary after the fall. A voice says "The angels were supposed to save us", survivors praise their new master, "Sanctuary is his", and it closes on "The Lord of Terror has returned."
The name followed to cheers, with the window: "Diablo 5 is coming in Spring 2029." The presenters set out the premise in three lines, "The heroes are gone. Sanctuary has fallen. And Diablo has won", and the change it brings: "There are no towns or safe places waiting to protect you."
"At the heart of Diablo 5," they said, "is the simple question, what must you become when the world has already fallen?", and they invited the audience to the Forging the Next Era panel that afternoon.
Earlier in the ceremony, Johanna Faries had announced that Blizzard is "in development on a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix". Blizzard says more details will be shared in the future.
The Forging the Next Era panel
The panel, hosted by Johanna Faries, brought five of the developers on stage: executive producer Matt Zitterman, senior production director Tiffany Wat, senior game director Joe Shely, narrative director Jennifer Hepler and senior art director John Mueller. Tiffany Wat, who has worked with Joe Shely and John Mueller on earlier Diablo games, said "we got the team back together to work on Diablo 5".
John Mueller recalled that the last time he and Tiffany Wat were on stage together was "way back in 2019 when we announced Diablo 4", and said the team is now "hard at work on Diablo 5".
Joe Shely set out what the panel would cover: "story, world, some classes, and a bit about gameplay, and even a little bit about itemization", before the teaser was shown again.
"Westmarch is definitely burning," the host said of the teaser; the answer was that "we're a long way from the campfire" and "Sanctuary has been destroyed and Diablo has won". The panel went on to the Story and Setting, the Caravan, the Procedural World, the first Classes and Items and Inventory.
Matt Zitterman explained why Blizzard showed the game so early: the team wants player feedback "as early as possible", and "it's why we're announcing today". See Release and Development.
What the reveal left out
Blizzard's own words at BlizzCon set the limits of what is known. The developers had "no specific platforms to announce right now" (Release and Development), the game was not put on sale and Blizzard's Diablo 5 site only takes sign-ups for news, and no date was given within Spring 2029. Only three classes were shown, the Demon Hunter, the Monk and the new Plague Knight, though Joe Shely promised more classes at launch than any Diablo game has had (Classes). As of Oct 23, 2026 Blizzard has shown nothing new about Diablo 5 since the reveal.
