Release and Development
Diablo 5 is due in Spring 2029 on platforms not yet announced. Blizzard showed it early to hear from players, plans regular updates from 2027, and says Diablo IV stays supported until then.
"Diablo 5 is coming in Spring 2029," Blizzard announced at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026, or, in its written recap, "Diablo V will be unleashed in Spring 2029". No date within the season has been given, and the platforms have not been announced: asked in DayOne's group interview, the team said there are "no specific platforms to announce right now", adding that "we want as many people to play Diablo V as possible". Why a sequel
Executive producer Matt Zitterman said the team studied Diablo II, what worked and how it grew with player feedback, and then asked "do we do this as an expansion" or "as a sequel?" A sequel lets them "change the fundamentals of what the game is", which is hard "on top of a game that's been around for several years, has had several expansions and seasons", so "we really needed to build a new game".
The starting point was players: after 30 years Diablo has players "with lots of different wants and needs", and the team wants "a Diablo game that is for every type of Diablo player", from those who come for "the story and the vibes and the dark fantasy" to those who "grind bosses and find loot and minmax their build".
Why show it now
"We want to get that feedback as early as possible. It's why we're announcing today," Matt Zitterman said: the team wants to bring the community "into the process of making the game along the way towards our launch date".
He promised "regular updates about how development is going", starting in 2027. Blizzard's own summary says the reveal "marks the beginning of an ongoing conversation with the Diablo player community".
Asked by IGN when players will learn more, the team pointed to the same conversation, continuing "into 2027", to "build the game alongside" players by listening to what they want.
DayOne reported that the team is "very confident in hitting that date", citing "clarity of creative vision and clarity of production schedule", and that Diablo 5 builds on the foundation of Diablo IV, which let work on it start in parallel.
Diablo IV until then
With more than two years to go, the team told IGN that Diablo IV is "fully supported", with "ongoing support" to come, and that Diablo 5 has been "in development for some time" and is "in full production".
Diablo IV's Season of Hell's Legacy, celebrating "30 years of darkness", launched on Tuesday, Sep 15, 2026, bringing back Deckard Cain and the three Prime Evils, among them "the birthday boy himself, Diablo".
Diablo IV came to Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day, announced on stage by Joe Shely.
Diablo IV's first class pack brings the javelin-wielding Amazon: "The Amazon Class Pack is going to arrive the first half of 2027."
Beyond the games
A Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix, Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced at the same ceremony. Asked about it, the Diablo 5 team told DayOne only that "when the time is right, we'll talk about more here".
