Diablo 5 launch: Jun 2029Not announced: our best guess from Blizzard's Spring 2029 window and Diablo 4's early June launch
Best guessBlizzard has announced only Spring 2029 (BlizzCon, Sep 12, 2026) and told DayOne it is very confident of hitting it. We count to the end of that window on Diablo 4's pattern, which launched on a Tuesday in early June (Jun 6, 2023, from 4 p.m. PT the day before): Tuesday, Jun 5, 2029. Blizzard

Fan Reaction

How players took the Diablo 5 reveal, moment by moment, from Frostylaroo's compilation of streamers watching it live: disbelief and cheering, surprise at Spring 2029, worry about what happens to Diablo IV, and a running joke about "powers".

Players met the Diablo 5 reveal with disbelief and cheering, then with two questions: why Spring 2029, and what happens to Diablo IV until then.

When Diablo 5 was revealed at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026 (see BlizzCon 2026 Reveal), streamers watching live went from silence to shouting in a few seconds. Frostylaroo's "Diablo 5 Reaction", a nine and a half minute compilation of those streams published on Sep 15, opens on the teaser's last line, "The Lord of Terror has returned", and then on one streamer after another: "Diablo 5. What?", "There's no way, right?", and a chanted "Diablo 5. Diablo 5. Diablo 5", followed by "wait, are we serious?". The moments below follow the compilation in order. Diablo 5 is not due until Spring 2029, so these are reactions to an announcement, not to the game.

"The Lord of Terror has returned"

In the hall itself, DayOne filmed the audience as the teaser played; over the music and cheering, one voice sums it up: "Holy crap."

Then came the date. "Really? What? Like 2029?" one streamer asks, "I was joking", shouts another, and the stage confirms it: "Diablo 5 is coming in Spring 2029." One more read the whole announcement as Blizzard deciding to start over.

"I did not see that coming"

Surprise was the common thread. "This seems so weird," one streamer says, "I just didn't expect this at all. I'm so confused." Another felt Diablo IV was only "one third of the way through", as if "we're just getting out of beta", and now "Diablo 5 in 2029. In two and a half years."

"Did you expect it?" one streamer asks a friend who has joined his stream. "No, not at all," and "almost no one expected that".

For others it was simply good news: "Diablo 5 incoming", "Let's go. D5", and "I can't wait to see what they actually do with Diablo 5." The compilation cuts in a developer from the Forging the Next Era panel saying what excites the team: "Diablo is finally back."

Questions about the story

The premise that Diablo has won puzzled some. One streamer, who says he does not play action RPGs for the lore, thought Diablo had "already won" in Diablo II, where the world was left in ruins, and asked what the difference is. Another found it "crazy that Diablo 5 gets announced before we see Diablo in Diablo 4". Blizzard's answer is on Story and Setting: this time the heroes of the past failed, and the player lives in the world they could not save.

"What's going to happen with Diablo 4?"

The most repeated worry was the fate of Diablo IV. Streamers had seen "a lot of people being unhappy" and chat saying Diablo IV is "dead now"; one wondered whether it would be sunset "once Diablo 5 becomes a thing", another whether there is "any reason to ever go back and play D4".

Some were blunter. One called it "a pump and dump", while another said he had been "expecting something like this", with more paid updates, and predicted "a new Diablo every three years now".

Earlier in the compilation, one streamer put the sequel down to Diablo IV's problems, in stronger words, and suggested Blizzard was making "D5 now so early" because it could not fix the game's stash.

Others were more measured. One said the last expansion "made the game good", the first time he felt Diablo IV was "actually good", before Blizzard "drop the ball" the season after.

A longer criticism followed: that Blizzard puts real effort into what it charges for and less into free seasons, and the worry that seasons will get worse now that "the team is split" between Diablo IV and "designing Diablo 5".

The "powers" joke

The compilation's running gag is Diablo IV's seasonal powers. Clips of presenters announcing "new powers" are cut together with streamers chanting "Powers. Powers. Powers", "malignant powers", "boss powers", and one who got a soundboard button for it.

Asked what they would like to see in Diablo 5, streamers kept the joke going: "powers" would be "a game changer", and better still, you could "mix and match some of the powers".

The criticism under the joke is spelled out at the end: one streamer says Diablo IV's road map was "basically just borrowed powers for like a year", before a last chorus of "power, power, power".

"Run it back"

Not everyone was against it. One streamer came round to it: "it's the right call. Dump D4. Make D5. Let's go. We learned all the lessons. Run it back." Another worried about the opposite, that Blizzard said it was looking at what to keep from Diablo IV, which he would not choose as "the best base" for a new game.

What Blizzard says

Blizzard's answer to the question streamers asked most came the next day. The Diablo 5 team told IGN that Diablo IV is "fully supported", pointing to the Amazon class, the Season of Hell's Legacy and Diablo IV's arrival on Nintendo Switch 2, with "ongoing support" to come. In DayOne's group interview they promised "incredible reasons to keep playing Diablo IV". See Release and Development.

On why a sequel rather than more Diablo IV, executive producer Matt Zitterman told the panel that the team asked whether to make an expansion or a sequel, and chose a sequel because it lets them "change the fundamentals of what the game is", which is hard on top of a game that has had "several expansions and seasons".

Six weeks on, Diablo IV is still getting new seasons. Blizzard announced on Oct 22, 2026 that its 3.3.0 public test realm for Season 16 runs from Oct 27 to Nov 3, 2026, and its patch notes list patch 3.2.4 for Oct 28. Blizzard has shown nothing more of Diablo 5 itself since BlizzCon.

Frequently asked questions

How did fans react to Diablo 5? With surprise first: streamers watching the BlizzCon opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026 shouted "Diablo 5. What?" and chanted its name. The Spring 2029 date and the future of Diablo IV were what they asked about most.

Why were players worried about Diablo IV? Many read a sequel as the end of Diablo IV, and some feared its seasons would get worse now that "the team is split" between the two games. Blizzard told IGN the next day that Diablo IV stays "fully supported".

Is Diablo IV dead now that Diablo 5 is announced? No. Blizzard keeps releasing seasons and patches: Season 16's test realm runs from Oct 27 to Nov 3, 2026.

Why did Blizzard make a sequel instead of another expansion? Executive producer Matt Zitterman said a sequel lets the team "change the fundamentals of what the game is", which is hard on top of a game with several expansions and seasons.

What is the "powers" joke about Diablo 5? A jab at Diablo IV's seasons, which kept adding borrowed seasonal powers. Streamers asked, tongue in cheek, for "powers" in Diablo 5.
