Launch Coming Blizzard Diablo 5 is due in Spring 2029, as Blizzard announced at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026. No date within the season and no platforms have been announced.
Diablo 5 is Blizzard Entertainment's next Diablo game, announced at BlizzCon on Sep 12, 2026 for Spring 2029, set in a Sanctuary where the heroes failed and Diablo has won. This viki covers its story, classes, caravan, procedural world and items, how fans reacted to the reveal, and every key paragraph plays the moment on YouTube that shows it.
Diablo 5, which Blizzard writes Diablo V, is the next main game in Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo series, announced on Sep 12, 2026 for Spring 2029. No gameplay has been shown yet. The closest look at the game itself is the inventory screen Blizzard put up at BlizzCon's Forging the Next Era panel, labeled as in-development content and "not final": item tooltips beside a character's equipped gear, with items that take up more than one slot (Items and Inventory).
How it will play is so far the team's own account at the same panel: "every gameplay session is a journey", through a Sanctuary that Diablo and his Dread Commanders keep reshaping, so the landmarks, the monsters and the terrain are a little different each time you return. How it was shown is on BlizzCon 2026 Reveal, and how players took it on Fan Reaction.
Blizzard announced it at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, in the series' 30th anniversary year, with the words "Diablo 5 is coming in Spring 2029". Its premise turns the series around: "The heroes are gone. Sanctuary has fallen. And Diablo has won." For the first time, players will not fight to stop Diablo taking Sanctuary but enter a world where he already has, with "no towns or safe places waiting to protect you".

The premise
The story is built around Diablo himself. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler told the Forging the Next Era panel that the Lord of Terror "couldn't just be a final boss" but had to shape the game "from its opening moments", so this time players are not racing to protect Sanctuary: "other heroes rose up to try to stop Diablo, and they failed", and the player lives in the aftermath. Diablo rules from the throne of Westmarch, and the player is its heir. See Story and Setting.
The 48 second teaser sets the tone in a few lines: "The angels were supposed to save us", survivors praise their new lord, "Sanctuary is his", and it ends on "The Lord of Terror has returned."
How it plays
With Sanctuary under Diablo's rule there are no towns to return to. The idea that stuck, the team told the panel, is that "the player is the point of safety": a traveling caravan of survivors goes with you through the campaign and grows as you meet more of them, becoming your merchants, craftspeople and companions. See Caravan.
The world itself changes. Blizzard is "bringing back the procedural world both in the dungeons and the overworld", so a region you return to has different terrain, landmarks and monsters, behind a fog of war. See Procedural World.
Three classes were shown first: the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, and the Plague Knight, a heavily armored new class that spreads disease and consumes it for power. Senior game director Joe Shely promised that Diablo 5 will launch with more classes than any Diablo game has had. See Classes.
Items take inspiration from Diablo II: item tiers, larger items that take up more inventory slots, gear-based sets, experiments with stat requirements, and Runes and Runewords in crafting. See Items and Inventory.
What changes from Diablo IV
Asked by IGN whether Diablo 5 keeps Diablo IV's open world, Tiffany Wat pointed to the caravan instead: there are "no more towns", and players move "from region to region" through a Sanctuary the Dread Commanders have twisted.
| Diablo 5 | Diablo IV | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The Western Continent, with Westmarch at its center | The east of Sanctuary |
| Diablo | Has already won, and is present from the start | Not the main antagonist |
| Safe places | None: the caravan travels with you | Towns and strongholds |
| World | Procedural overworld and dungeons | A fixed open world with procedural dungeons |
| Sets | Gear-based sets return | The Lord of Hatred talisman |
Diablo IV until then
Diablo 5 is more than two years away, and the team told IGN that Diablo IV is "fully supported", pointing to the Amazon class coming to it, the Season of Hell's Legacy that began on Sep 15 and its arrival on Nintendo Switch 2. Diablo 5 itself, they added, is "in full production". See Release and Development.
Frequently asked questions
When does Diablo 5 come out? In Spring 2029, Blizzard announced at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026. No date within the season has been given. See Release and Development.
Is it Diablo 5 or Diablo V? The same game: Blizzard writes Diablo V, and players and the press write Diablo 5.
What platforms will Diablo 5 be on? Not announced yet. The team said it had "no specific platforms to announce right now".
Can I pre-order or wishlist Diablo 5? Not yet. It is not on sale anywhere; Blizzard's Diablo 5 site only takes sign-ups for news.
What is Diablo 5 about? Diablo has already won. About a hundred years after Diablo IV, he rules Sanctuary from the throne of Westmarch, the heroes who tried to stop him have failed, and the player is the Heir to Westmarch. See Story and Setting.
What classes are in Diablo 5? Three have been shown: the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, and the new Plague Knight. Blizzard promises more classes at launch than any Diablo game has had. See Classes.
Does Diablo 5 have towns? No. A caravan of survivors travels with the player instead and grows into merchants, craftspeople and companions. See Caravan.
Is Diablo 5 open world? Not in Diablo IV's sense: its overworld and dungeons are procedural, so a region you return to has different terrain, landmarks and monsters. See Procedural World.
Has Diablo 5 gameplay been shown? No. The closest look so far is an inventory screen from the BlizzCon panel, marked as in development and not final.
